Hannah Spencer has been elected the new Green MP for the constituency of Gorton and Denton. Spencer succeeds former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, who resigned on health grounds earlier this year.
Spencer, a plumber and also a recently qualified plasterer, becomes the first ever Green Party MP to win a Parliamentary by-election. She is also the Green Party’s first ever Northern MP.
Spencer was followed in second place by Reform UK’s, Matt Goodwin, and a full breakdown of results for each candidate can be found below:

Joseph O’Meachair (The Rejoin EU Party): 98 votes
Jackie Pearcey (Liberal Democrats): 653 votes
Hannah Spencer (The Green Party): 14,980 votes
Angeliki Stogia (The Labour Party): 9,364 votes
Hugo Wils (Communist League): 29 votes
The result marks a significant victory for Hannah Spencer and The Green Party, with a 4,402 majority. Labour previously held a 13,413 majority in Gorton and Denton, and their slip to third place in this by-election surely puts further pressure on Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer.
