Extra police patrols deployed after synagogue attack sparks community safety concerns

Jewish communities in North Manchester, Bury and Salford to see increased officer presence as police respond to Crumpsall synagogue stabbing

Extra police officers have been deployed across parts of Greater Manchester following a serious incident at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road, Crumpsall.

The attack, which took place on Thursday, prompted an immediate response from Greater Manchester Police, who have confirmed that additional uniformed officers will now patrol key areas including North Manchester, Bury and Salford.

The deployments are focused on providing reassurance to local Jewish communities, with visible patrols taking place near synagogues and places of worship throughout the weekend, including during Shabbat observance.

City of Manchester District Commander, Chief Superintendent David Meeney, said: “We have taken this action to ensure that our Jewish communities and wider communities within Greater Manchester feel safe and reassured following yesterday’s tragic incident in Crumpsall.

“People can expect to see uniformed officers on patrol in vehicles and on foot throughout today, into this evening, and over the weekend.

“They are there to reassure you and, whilst they may not be able to answer questions about the investigation, they will be happy to reassure you about the actions we are taking to ensure communities are safe and feel safe.

“We are conscious of the significance of Fridays and Saturdays in the Jewish faith, and will be doing everything we can to help communities mark Shabbat with their families and friends as they wish.”

The incident itself remains under investigation, with GMP not yet releasing full details of the attack. However, sources close to the community have described it as "deeply disturbing", with heightened concerns about safety during religious observance.

Police say they will be increasing visits to places of worship and continue to assess the situation to determine if further measures are needed. Additional plans are expected to be drawn up over the weekend.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity or concerns to officers on patrol or via the GMP website. The force has published a full statement online and promised that further updates will be made available as soon as possible.
