Storage unit users in Middleton have been left fearing the worst as a major fire involving lithium ion batteries continues to burn through a commercial building, with thick smoke, water, and fire damage expected to have affected much of the site.
Firefighters have remained at the scene of Storage World on Old Hall Street since 4.50pm on Wednesday 18 June, after a significant blaze erupted at the facility. Eight engines and specialist appliances were initially deployed. By Thursday morning, six engines were still present along with an aerial unit and the service’s high-reach Scorpion platform.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed the fire involves lithium ion batteries, a hazardous material known to cause recurring ignition and intense heat. Crews worked through the night in “challenging conditions”, tackling deep-seated pockets of fire and securing the structure.

United Utilities has assisted the firefighting operation by boosting water supply to the site. Additional hydrants and water lines have been deployed to ensure crews had access to sufficient water pressure during the emergency response.
Although no formal damage assessment has been issued, the scale and nature of the fire have led many customers with storage units to expect severe damage or total loss. Flames, dense smoke, and heavy water saturation are all thought to have affected the building’s interior.
A GMFRS spokesperson said: “Crews have worked hard overnight to contain the fire at the commercial premises on Old Hall Street, Middleton. Six fire engines, the aerial unit and Scorpion remain in attendance to tackle pockets of fire and make the building safe in challenging conditions.”
Residents have been advised to keep windows and doors shut as smoke continues to rise from the site. Several roads, including Old Hall Street, Townley Street, Market Place and Lodge Street, remain closed. Diversion routes such as Long Street and Oldham Road are experiencing congestion as a result.
Storage World has confirmed it will contact customers by Friday afternoon at the latest, once a damage assessment can be safely conducted. “Please do not contact us directly but wait for us to communicate with you,” the company said in a public statement.
Nearby venues such as Middleton Arena have announced on social media that they will remain closed today, and local retailers have temporarily closed due to the incident. Greater Manchester Police are also on the scene.
