New Greggs planned for service station

Petrol station off Church Street, Littleborough

A new Greggs could soon be built at a petrol station in Littleborough.

Under new plans, the car wash that sits next to the service station off Church Road would be demolished and replaced with a ‘food to go’ pod. The UK’s leading food-on-the-go bakery would provide a pod with a total floor area of 70 sqm, including a sales area; a serving station; and a storage and bakery section around the back of the pod.

Greggs have apparently been looking to expand to this part of the Rochdale borough for a while.

Five car parking bays are also included in the plans to alleviate current parking problems at the site. According to planning papers submitted by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), the petrol station suffers from issues with poor parking due to having no formal spaces for cars to pull up.

MFG says four full-time and four part-time jobs would be created by this proposal.

Planning papers read: “The application seeks approval for the demolition of the site’s existing jet wash facility and its replacement with a ‘Food to Go’ pod, to be operated by Greggs.

“This proposed ‘Food to Go’ Pod will provide jobs suitable for local residents, particularly residents who wish to be flexible in the hours they work. The proposal will therefore bring a wide range of economic benefits.

“In addition, the proposed car parking facility will greatly enhance the site’s legibility. At present, the absence of designated parking results in irregular and informal parking by customers; the new facility will address this issue effectively.”

If approved by Rochdale council, this pod would be the latest of thousands of shops provided by the huge bakery chain started by John Greggs over 85 years ago.
