Local residents are being asked to weigh in on how the council should revamp the public square around an iconic sculpture in Bury. The local authority is teaming up with Proffitts, a community interest company that specialises in regenerating public spaces, to redesign the surroundings of the Tilted Vase sculpture at Market Square and Bridge Street Gardens in Ramsbottom.
The project is to turn both sites into ‘more inviting’ spaces and encourage people to spend more time there.
Known locally as ‘The Urn’, the £250,000 bronze water feature was first installed in 1998. It divided opinion, with one councillor at the time describing it as ‘a monstrosity’.
But the 10-tonne artwork by Edward Allington has become a recognizable feature in the town, and is still a part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail.
However, both public spaces have not seen investment for quite some time. Now members of the public are being asked to chip in about what improvements they would like to see.
Proposals include updated planting and landscaping, improved access and entrances, and the introduction of new seating, signage and bins.
A survey, which residents can fill out on the council website, also suggests new artworks and more colourful planting, though locals can also put forward their own ideas.
Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, Bury Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Growth, said: ‘’These spaces play a key role in the daily life of the community, and we are eager to make improvements that enhance these well-known sites, while also maintaining the character that makes Ramsbottom so special.
“This consultation gives the community an opportunity to help shape the plans, and provide feedback to inform the next stage of development and ensure the improvements reflect local priorities and aspirations.’’
Proffitts helps maintain a number of different council-owned spaces around the borough. It recently created a new pump track for youngsters at Summerseat Island and is working on improvements to Boz Park in Whitefield.
