Supporting forces veterans at Bury’s café hub

Cllr Eamonn O’Brien at the veterans breakfast hub with Roy Davey, formerly of the Royal Army Medical Corp, and veterans’ relatives Pete Sandiford and David Isaacs.

Bury Council and NHS Bury CCG will sign a new armed forces covenant next week which will help give veterans and their families the support they need and deserve.

Council leader Eamonn O’Brien made the announcement following a visit he made to a breakfast club run by Bury Veterans hub cafe C.I.C.

The hub café is located at Radcliffe Borough FC, where veterans can get support through social events such as breakfasts as well as day trips and activities. The breakfast club is every Wednesday from 10am to noon, and all veterans and family members are welcome. The hub also supports the mental health and wellbeing of Bury veterans. As restrictions ease the hub has many plans for support over the festive season including a Christmas dinner.

Cllr O’Brien said: “Armed forces personnel look after us in the most difficult of circumstances, and it’s only right that we look after them and their families.

The veterans hub is run by a fantastic team of volunteers, in the true community spirit of what we want to see across our borough. By signing the armed forces covenant next week we can continue to support veterans and amazing organisations like the veterans hub.”

Also at the breakfast was Cllr Richard Gold, cabinet member for communities and armed forces champion for Bury. He said: “The breakfast club is only the tip of the iceberg of what the hub offers. It’s run by an amazing team who are all volunteers, and I urge veterans and their families to come down, have a great time and see what support is available for them.”
