Oldham College and Oldham Council have launched a campaign encouraging employers to create 100 apprenticeship opportunities in 100 days to help more young people into work, training and education. The initiative launched on 21 May and will run throughout the summer recruitment period.
The campaign is aimed at connecting local businesses with young people preparing to leave school and college this summer, with organisations of all sizes being encouraged to take part whether they are ready to recruit immediately or considering future apprenticeship opportunities.
The initiative supports the Government's Youth Guarantee programme and includes financial support of up to £3,000 for eligible employers.
Council figures show Oldham currently has the highest youth unemployment rate in Greater Manchester at 7.5 per cent, while around four per cent of known 16 to 17 year olds are classed as not in education, employment or training.
Around 800 apprentices study with Oldham College each year across a range of sectors, helping businesses recruit and train future staff. The college says additional support and incentives now available make it easier for organisations to invest in apprenticeships.
Support includes fully funded apprenticeship training for eligible younger apprentices in small businesses, reduced National Insurance contributions for eligible apprentices under 25 and incentives of up to £8,500 for qualifying construction employers through the Construction Industry Training Board.
The campaign will also promote Foundation Apprenticeships, designed as a more flexible route for employers introducing young people into the workplace. Oldham College said employers will receive support throughout the recruitment process including advertising vacancies, candidate matching and guidance on funding systems.
Simon Jordan said, "Oldham is home to a huge number of talented young people who are ready to start their careers and make a positive contribution to local businesses."
He added, "There has never been a better time for organisations to consider taking on an apprentice. If employers across Oldham each create just one vacancy, together we can make a real difference to young people across the borough."
James Kington said, "We want young people in Oldham to have access to good quality opportunities and careers within their own community."
He added, "100 Apprenticeships in 100 Days is about bringing employers, education and local talent together to create real opportunities across Oldham and help build a stronger future workforce for the borough."
